Merry Christmas Everyone!!!

Sitting here in my warm little house with the early morning dawning, looking out at the new fallen snow, I can't help but feel the magnificence of the season.
I also say a prayer for all of those who are lonely or cold or lost on this day of joy.

Pine Peaks Restaurant

This is one of the best sit-down, family-friendly, clean restaurants in Crosslake. I have never had a bad meal or bad service! And despite how great it is, it's rarely over-crowded. The restaurant is nestled in a nice little spot between the Holiday gas station, the Haven Bookstore, and the Pine Peaks Lodge and Suites. I haven't stayed at the Lodge but I've heard really nice things about it. There's also a cute gift shop connected to the restaurant. Pine Peaks Restaurant is open 7 days a week 6:30 am – 8:30 pm.

This link will show you a small interior view of the restaurant and allow you to search other amenities in our area.

Big Trout Lake and Manhattan Beach Lodge

Big Trout Lake is over 13oo acres. It's part of the Whitefish Chain of lakes, meaning that it connects to other lakes in our area. The Big Trout Lake Access Area is on Route 66/#3. It's a great lake for boating, water-sports, and fishing. Lake trout have been stocked regularly since 1979. Another neat thing about Big Trout is that you can dock your boat right at Manhattan Beach Lodge. As their sign says; "Restuarant . Lodge . Sunsets". Have something to eat or drink, and relax. Life's beautiful, take time to enjoy it. http://www.mblodge.com/

Scrumpdillyicious Dairy Queen

Located right next to "the People's Store Antiques". Nothing better than getting a treat and going to the Dam and watching the sun set. Sweet!

Gas and Goceries

The population in Crosslake is guestimated to be somewhere around 3,000 (stats courtesy of http://www.zip-codes.com/city/MN-CROSSLAKE.asp), although the tourists in the summer make it seem like a lot more.
Reed's Market is our local grocery store. It's a good sized store, almost as big as Cub/Hugo's/Super One. Attached to the store is one of three in-town gas stations, Reed's Gas Express. We also have a Holiday Gas Station which you can see by rotating the weathercam. And there's gas at Moonlight Square/Profuel. Moonlight Square also has a Subway and a liquor store in the same building. Gas prices are pretty much the same as everywhere else.

UPPGAARD WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA

The Uppgaard Wildlife Management Area is a beautiful place to go walking, hiking, biking, etc... Be sure to bring your plant, bird, or wildlife identification books with you. The DNR maintains this 110 acres of woods and wetlands. Free maps are available at the entryway. The trails are well groomed. Along the path, are gardens with markers identifying the plants. I really enjoy the peace and the explorer spirit this area creates.

The Crosslake Comunity Center is a multi-purpose building. In it you will find the library with computer access, a gym, a work-out/weight room, and meeting rooms. The library is in the process of building a small terrace so patrons can read and enjoy the outdoors.

STAIRCASE LANDING

The Staircase Landing is another quiet, out-of-the-way spot to enjoy nature. When the river is high enough, it's a great spot to go canoeing, kayaking, or tubing.

Crosslake Town Square

Just off the beaten path of Route 66/#3 is the Crosslake Town Square. It's an adorable addition to our town. It contains several shops, including a drug store, a clothing store, a pizza place, and several other novelty shops. Most importantly there's the Chocolate Ox, this store contains all kinds of goodies, from fudge, to ice cream, to candy and soda. And conveniently located next door to the Chocolate Ox, is Anytime Fitness, exercise away all those sweet treats.

All through the summer, there's a live music series on Saturday evenings from 6:30- 8:30 in the park.

To see who's playing, check here: http://www.crosslakemusic.com/

Northern Trackers Railroad Club, Inc. RR Models & Museum

Attention all model train fans: The Northern Trackers Railroad Club operates a model railroad replica of the trains that were in the Lakes area. Crosslake Area Historical Society

One way to get to know a town is to learn its history. In 1799, Crosslake was the site of a fierce battle between the Ojibwe and the Sioux. Back in the 1800's, the big industry here was logging. The dams were created to help move the logs down the river. Eventually a railroad came through the area.

The Crosslake Area Historical Society has on display several original log buildings including the old school house, an old-time saloon and tourist cabin, a logger's cabin, the General Store, and the Crosslake Town Hall.

Visit here to learn more about the history of Crosslake and to view the Historical Society hours:

Crosslake Dam

The Ronald Louis Cloutier Recreation Area is better known as the Crosslake Dam. Located on Route 66/#3, it's easy to find. This is one of our favorite places to go. One of the best ways to relax in the evening is to get a Dairy Queen treat and lounge around the dam. You can picnic, swim, fish, play at the playground, camp, or go boating. Or a new fun thing to do is go Geocaching. Geocaching is a game played with your GPS. "Treasures" (usually not monetarily valuable) are hidden around the world and the coordinates are shared online. Using your GPS, follow the coordinates and find the treasure. There many Geocaches around Crosslake.

If you're interested in camping, please take a look at this brochure. It contains contact information as well as a map and other amenities.

Here are a few photos of the Dam. Come see the place for yourself. It really is much nicer in person.
